Abstract :
This paper investigates the effect of hardware impairments (HWIs) in wireless virtual reality (VR) systems. The considered framework is based on multi-user multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MUMIMO OFDM) with hybrid beamforming in an indoor downlink (DL) scenario. Since VR traffic requires extremely high data rates and strict latency guarantees, a substantial mmWave bandwidth allocation, as standardized in IEEE 802.11ad/ay, is employed. Unlike many existing works that assume ideal transceivers, this study explicitly models practical HWIs, including phase noise, in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance, and power amplifier nonlinearities. While a utility function is formulated to capture processing, transmission, and queuing delays in both DL and uplink (UL), results demonstrate that its effectiveness is ultimately constrained by HWI-induced distortions. Simulations in MATLAB and NS-3 confirm these findings, showing that HWIaware modeling is essential for reliable VR communications.
